Where did Parthenius teach Vergil?
Robert R. Dyer
As a slave of one (Helvius) Cinna, Parthenius would have been brought to
the family estate (and business, if that had already started) in Cisalpine
Gaul. He was then Vergil's real grammaticus in
Greek
(so Macrobius) at Cremona, not some later literary consultant elsewhere as
Clausen has argued. His Erotica Pathemata, sent to Vergil's
condiscipulus, Cornelius Gallus, show the interest
in morbid sexuality common to the Cisalpine poets educated by him.
