Henry Hoare's Virgilian Garden
Gloria Shaw Duclos, University of Southern Maine
In the years between 1753 and 1765, the merchant banker Henry Hoare
created
on his estate of Stourhead in the county of Wiltshire a visual and
topographical journey through the Aeneid. Included in the
garden are a
Temple of Ceres (departure from Troy, Book 2), a cavern of the nymphs
(arrival at Carthage, Book 1), a Pantheon (future site of Rome, Book 8), a
cascade (Vale of Amsanctus, Book 7), and finally a Temple of Apollo (Books
3 and 8). In addition, the plan of the garden reflects Virgil's own
technique of landscape description.
